What is coal?

Coal is the worlds most plentiful fossil fuel. It is a combustible, sedimentary, organic rock, which is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It is a mineral formed from the remains of land-based plants buried hundreds of millions of years ago and subjected to tremendous heat and pressure.

What are the four major types of coal?

Coal is usually classified into four categories, or ranks, based on how it responded to increasing heat and pressure over long periods of time and how much carbon it contains: Lignite (soft), Subbituminous (medium-soft), Bituminous (medium-hard) and Anthracite (hard).
Different types of coal have different application. Lignite contains a lot of moisture and ash and breaks apart easily.
